Vasthu

The word “Vasthu” has its root in Sanskrit word “vas” means “to dwell”. The term Vasthuvidya refers to the science and art of construction of buildings. The primary aim of Vasthuvidya is to integrate architecture with the 5 elements of nature (Earth, Sky, Air, Fire & Water) to get maximum advantage of the natural energies for the well being of the inhabitants. It provides the practical rules for the investigation and analysis for the selection of site and the process of site & building development. Vasthuvidya has its roots in Sthapathya Veda, a Upaveda (branch) of Athrarva Veda.

Relevance of Vasthuvidya in Modern Times

Vasthuvidya is the science that has evolved through uncompromising enquiry into the subject over centuries. The effort was to solve present needs of planning & constructing habitats. And the purpose was served efficiently during the past centuries. In the modern times, with the varied building requirements, vast developments in material and westernization, the rigid approach of Vasthuvidya may appear impractical and outdated. One need to understand that every science has evolved with time and this branch of science is a science that aims at improving the quality of life of inhabitants at all times. Hence, the basic concepts of Vasthuvidya is still relevant and applicable in an evolved way in the modern situations too. The major part of the current vasthu practitioners is applying Vasthu in this evolved way so as to ensure that the inhabitants get the maximum advantage of the natural energies in life.

Vasthupurusha

According to Hindu mythology (Matsyapurana), Vasthupurusha is a child that was created from Lord Shiva’s sweat while fighting with Andhakasura, a demon who killed sages. Vasthupurusha, who was a hungry child killed Andhakasura. After that he began to grow steadily, eating all that came near his mouth. This was terrifying after which the all the Devas decided to push him to Earth and all the Devas sat over him. He was also given a boon that he will occupy any piece of earth with boundaries made on four sides. Added to that the people will offer prayers and worship him. Since then the worship of Vastupurusha has been in practice so as to make the Vasthupurusha happy and comfortable. The so-called Vasthupurusha is a Cosmic energy field that forms when we separate the plot by building boundaries.
