CAREER AFTER ITI/ITC
“What after ITI/ITC?” is a question many would want to know as there is a general misgiving that ITI/ITC course is inferior to others. Today, in this 21st century, the skills of a professional matters more than their academic qualification.

ITI or Industrial training Institutes provide professional training to Indian students and aims to develop skilled workforce in India.
Note:
Industrial Training Centres (ITC’s) are self-financing institutions and provide same courses as ITI’s. Trade test for ITI and ITC trainees are common. The certificate issued by NCVT (National Council of Vocational Training) is of same standard whether one had training in Government owned ITI or privately owned ITC.
The main objective of ITI course is to make students ready for jobs by imparting technical training for students ranging from class eighth to class twelfth. There are plenty of scope to pursue a career after ITI. Students who have completed ITI course can either opt for higher studies or look for job opportunities.
Higher Studies
Diploma Courses
Joining Diploma course after ITI is a very practical option as it provides advanced knowledge in the chosen field. It adds “weight” to your CV and in turn widens the job opportunities.
There are several Diploma courses available in engineering streams like Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Computer Science which can be pursued after ITI.
Specialized short term courses
There are a lot of specialized courses offered by the Advanced Training Institutes (ATI), Calicut, Kerala. ATI or National Skill Training Institute, is a technical institute under the Directorate General of Training, Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship of the Government of India.
It aims to develop skilled manpower for industry, instructional staff for the Industrial Training Institutes, and to upgrade the skill of in-service persons from industry and is funded by the Government of India.
ATI offers short term courses like HVAC, CAD (Autocad & Catia) automation, automobile and electrical training.
All India Trade Test (AITT)
AITT, conducted by the National Council of Vocational Training, is another option for students completing ITI course. It is conducted twice a year for 15 trades. The best craftsmen in each of these trades will be awarded the National Trade Certificate (NTC) and a cash prize. The NTC is considered equal to a diploma course in many engineering jobs
Job Prospects
In Public Sector
The public/government sector is one of the biggest employers of students who have completed ITI. Various public sector units (PSUs) like railways, state-wise PWDs, BSNL, IOCL, ONGC and many more provide job opportunities for ITI students.
Also, there are a lot of job opportunities in the Indian army, Indian navy, BSF, CRPF, and other paramilitary forces.
In Private Sector
The private sector provides great opportunities for students to pursue a career after ITI. Private manufacturing and mechanic companies require skilled students according to their trade requirements.
Apart from these companies, ITI students can also find jobs in sectors like agriculture, energy construction and many more. Electronics, Welding refrigeration, and air conditioner mechanics are by far the most sought after skills in terms of specific job profiles.
Self-Employment
Students with an ITI certificate can start their own business and be self-employed. Nowadays as there is an acute shortage of trained and qualified professionals in many vital fields, an ITI Certificate helps you a lot to start your own business as plumbers, carpenters, construction workers, agricultural workers and many more. For specific trades like Fitters, there are many opportunities with international oil and gas factories, shipyards etc.
In Foreign Countries
Another career opportunity that ITI students can explore after the completion of their course is off-shore jobs. Similar to India, many developed and developing countries are facing the shortage of blue-collar professionals; people who can fix things or provide associated services. Especially for specific trades like Fritters, there are many job opportunities with international oil and gas factories and shipyards etc.
