Media, or medium, refers to anything that passes information along. From a classic newspaper to your Facebook homepage, media is all around us.

The media industry is vast, large, and ever-growing, with a wide variety of different roles available. Media is an incredibly popular sector and an extremely interesting area to work in.

This sector offers numerous career opportunities to candidates which are not only high paying but also bring in job satisfaction and expression of creativity.

Media sector spreads its branches to different fields like newsgathering and reporting, film direction and production, event management, public relations, advertising, corporate communication, and the list continues.

Media can be split into two categories: traditional and digital media.

Traditional media or old media is any form of mass communication that occurred before the introduction of the internet, e.g radio, newspapers, television and billboards.

Digital media or new media is any form of media introduced after the internet that uses an electronic device for distribution such as such as social media, podcasts, online games, blogs and YouTube.

Specializations

Media sector jobs can be broadly classified as below:

  • Film/Video Editor – A Film Editor, or Video Editor, is responsible for turning uncut footage from a film shoot into a finished, cohesive final project. Their duties include studying film scripts and using them to guide scene development, determining which camera angles to use and coordinating sound and visual effects in post-production.
  • Journalist – Journalists research, write, edit, proofread and file news stories, features and articles. Their pieces are used on television and radio or within magazines, journals and newspapers, in print and online.
  • Technical Writer – Technical writers create everything from instruction manuals to articles to documentation, and tend to work in STEM-related industries. To do this job, you’ll need a bachelor’s degree and experience with a technical subject, as well as the ability to explain complex concepts to a variety of different audiences and hit deadlines.
  • Reporter – Ground zero of journalism jobs, reporters inform the public about news and events, spending much of their time in the field, conducting interviews and investigating stories. They work on tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment, striving to be the first to publish the story
  • Public Relations Specialist – If you have fantastic communication skills and are comfortable talking up the merits of your favorite brand or product, a career in PR might be the perfect fit for you.
  • Blogger – Bloggers write, edit, post, and promote the content on their web pages or websites. They generate and pitch ideas, compose and edit posts, market posts to readers, and conduct research.
  • Sound Engineer – Sound engineers work in a variety of different environments, from recording studios to stadiums to theaters, recording sound files. They also often maintain recording equipment. Sound engineers have variable schedules, depending on the needs of their clients.
  • Art Director – Art directors design visual concepts for promotions and products. They may work in print, online, television, and other media. To succeed at this job, you must have good communication skills and can manage a team of artists, as well as have proficiency in relevant design software.
  • Content Strategist – A content strategist job description constitutes planning, designing, creating, editing, and publishing relevant content based on the company’s business objectives and users’ needs. The strategist’s main job is to develop a content strategy that conforms to and sets out to achieve business goals.
  • Social Media Specialist – A Social Media Specialist is responsible for creating and publishing content on all social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, to grow an audience, build brand awareness, and ultimately, boost sales.
  • Interpreter/Translator – Interpreters and translators aid communication by converting messages or text from one language into another language. Interpreters convert information from one spoken language into another—or, in the case of sign language interpreters, between spoken language and sign language.
